Start with a WHY!
We always answer the 4 questions- What/ How/ When/ Where.
For Example, if you are planning to start reading, these questions are easy-
1. How to start the reading (Ebook/ audio etc)
2. What/Which book to read
3. When to read
4. Where to read
But we never never try to understand, Why to start reading a book. What is the purpose behind it. Many people believe that reading is leisure activity. It is to relax our mind, our soul etc. Trust me, it is much more than that.
I always say, Don't read books. Use them
Use them to solve your life problems. The basic idea of reading a book, especially non fiction should be to get answers of the problem you are facing or an ambition you are trying to achieve.
For example-
Let's say you want to be financially successful, read books that talks about making money.
If you want to live a peaceful life, stress free, read books that gives you solution to release stress.
If you want to improve your people management skills, read books written by Dale Carnegie to improve your soft skills.
Books are not just papers. Books are the weapons to kill the problem of our life.
Selecting the perfect Book
Now that you have identified your problem, it is time to select the perfect book for you.
The major issue with people is they go with popular book or books that are bestsellers
For example, The immortals of Meluha by Amish Tripathi is a very popular book, now you can go ahead and buy it and read it.
Before doing that, Just ask yourself these questions,
- Is this book directly related to the problem of my life?
- Will this book give me answers to the questions I have about my life.
- Do I even like reading Mythology?
- I am struggling with money, will this book help me overcome that?
Now I have read the book, and it's amazing. But when I want to change my life, I am very particular in selecting the book. And that is what you should do. Select the book based on your problem.
How to connect with book
Just like a trailer of the film, where you get a glimpse of film, you need to create a hype of the book in your head.
- Google the Author
- Research the book- bestselling, awards etc
- Most important- go to goodreads.com and read reviews of the book
Planning your book for 7 days
The most important step in learning and finishing your book Reading is to plan your reading for 7 day.
For example, you started the book on Monday, your target should be to finish and learn form the book by Sunday.
Exactly 7 days you have to finish and utilise the learnings from the book.
Planning the book is very important for finishing and completing the book. You need to divide the no. Of pages or no. Chapter with the desired days of completion.
For eg- if you have a 200 pages book, and you wish to finish that in 5 days, you must divide the pages/chapter. So everyday you need to complete 40 pages minimum.
Or if there are 15 chapters, you need to complete 3 chapters per day. There has to be a commitment that comes along with planning. We need to stick to it. Meticulously.

Speed reading is very simple and easy to achieve as compared to popular belief that it is technical.
I would suggest to follow these 3 strategies to elevate your reading speed-
1. Mode of the book
Most of us are in a habit of reading Ebook or PDF as it is easily available. I would say go with the traditional approach. Physical books are still the best to improve reading speed as it is comfortable and does not strain our eyes. Also, many experts suggest that, using audio book while reading the text can help you concentrate more.
Honestly, this is very subjective. Try different methods and find your most comfortable spot. For me personally, it is physical books.

2. Mind Reading Vs Loud Reading
Most of us are in a habit of reading aloud or at least reading like we are speaking, thanks to our exam based education system.
This results in covering less words in a minute. What we need to do is to read in our mind without speaking those words aloud, consciously or unconsciously.
This results in covering less words in a minute. What we need to do is to read in our mind without speaking those words aloud, consciously or unconsciously.
The average reading speed of any average person is 150-200 words per minute. By just following this technique, I have developed a reading speed of 350. You can do it too.
3. The most simple technique- fix a time for reading
Reading is an exercise. Your brain needs to be comfortable with a pattern. Just like workout, you need to fix a time for reading. 30 minutes a day, morning, afternoon, before sleep, anytime.
By doing this, you are putting your brain to a standard pattern and it will give you a boost for speed Reading.
How to read 52 books in 1 year
There is a math to finish this many books. To read 52 books, we need to complete 1 book per week.
Now, the average reading speed is actually 200 words per minute.
And any book that is approximately 200 pages has more or less 50k words.
Now if I do a simple calculation
Total words/ words per minute
50000/200= 250
So, Technically I need an average of 250 minutes to complete a book.
That is just 35 minutes per day in a week. So if I read for 30 minutes a day, I can finish reading 52 books in one year.
How many of you just had a VOW moment???
